An automation (plural: automata or automations) is a self-operating machine controlled by a difference engine. It can be steampowered o by clockwork.
They are also known as Clockbots, Steambots, Mechanical Men, Clockworkbots,Scrapbots. Smaller automations may have a difference engine to control it, but most clockbots more complex than a Windup Cat are controlled via Wireless Telegraph by a remote difference engine.
